Cardiff is going pop-up crazy
Cardiff is becoming the city for fantastic food and drink, with dozens of quirky eateries, bars and cafés that are popping up all over the place. Cardiff residents and visitors are spoilt for choice, and the new independent eateries and pop-ups just keep on coming. The choices can feel almost overwhelming, which might persuade you to burrow back to Nando’s for your usual spicy chicken wings, but fear not, we’re here to point you in the right direction! We hope that this list of mouth-watering eateries will stop you in your tracks, go on, and try something new!
The work of an artisan
Not one but two Artigiano have recently opened in Cardiff, one on Queen Street and the other on Working Street, and what can we say? We love it! This unique coffee bar really does combine the best of both worlds, being a café by day and a bar by night. Artigiano offers delicious house-roast coffee, craft beer, freshly blended smoothies and juices, carefully selected wines, cocktails and a delicious variety of lunch meals. Stay right through to the evening and witness the bar come alive with live acoustic performances from both local and well-known musicians.
What’s The Plan?
If you love coffee, then paying a visit to The Plan should be on your Cardiff to do list! This independent café is the perfect place to go for a tasty lunch, a quick breakfast, or a relaxing coffee catch up with your friends. The menu is fantastic, offering tasty meat dishes as well as a broad range of plates for vegetarians and vegans. If you’re a coffee enthusiast, you will be blown away by the flavoursome gourmet-blend of coffee that The Plan has to offer.
Make an event of food
Street Food Cardiff will return to Depot this year to bring together the best food pop-ups from Wales, transforming an unused warehouse into a social food hub. Last year’s event was a huge success, enlivening the area with a great diverse range of food and drink. SFC collaborates chefs, local businesses and food enthusiasts who make it their mission to show Cardiff what good food really tastes like. Expect dozens of stalls speckled around the warehouse, serving cocktails, beers, wines, and a scrumptious mix of mouth-watering delights that are inspired by foods from around the world.
Fabulous fried chicken
Dirty Bird Fried Chicken is a finger licking pop-up, offering a scrumptious menu with chicken soups, wraps, sandwiches, sides, and fried and rotisserie chicken – delicious! The menu might seem like a chicken overload but when you have tried the nacho battered chicken once, you’ll be sure to come back for more! The company will trade its scrumptious food at Street Food Cardiff on the 1st of August and at Jacobs Market Carpark on the 1st-2nd of September.
Fancy a burger?
Got Beef, originated as a bus that trucked its juicy meat around the country for music and food events, which soon turned into a pop-up, and has now progressed into a trendy restaurant on Whitchurch Road. What do they sell? Just burgers - yeah that’s right! We love how dedicated eateries are to their specialities these days! The restaurant has an open kitchen which allows customers to watch their food being freshly prepared. The burgers are worth every bite, just wait ‘til you’ve tried them, you’ll be back for more meat in no time, which is why the company has seen early success over the past three years.
A scientific snack
It’s always time for dessert at Science Cream! Have you seen the bazaar ice cream parlour in Castle Arcade where the staff wear safety goggles, a white science jacket, and use science equipment? Gives you flashbacks to chemistry lessons? Don’t panic, there’s nothing boring about Science Cream, just delicious ice cream. Do you dare try it? The ice cream is made (safely) using liquid nitrogen, to create a smoother texture and a richer flavour. If you haven’t been before, take your friends and experience ice cream like no other!
With Cardiff’s food scene growing massively, we urge you to step away from the typical food chains and try something locally owned – show your support to your community! It’s time to get adventurous and try something different! We’d love to hear about where you love to eat in Cardiff, Tweet your images to @CapProp.
