De-stress after a busy term with these exciting Christmas activities

Father Christmas [photo via pixabay]Your first term away from home is always the hardest, especially as a fresher - nothing says "welcome to real life" more than being away from your mum's home cooking for a month or two and learning to budget so that you don't spend all of your money at once. Now, however, the last day of uni has been and gone and you’re able to go back home for Christmas and enjoy the holidays by doing nothing but relaxing and watching festive movies. And maybe teaching your family a thing or two about decorating.

Of course, while the Christmas break brings with it the looming threat of exams and coursework deadlines in January, here at Capital Properties, we're firm believers in blowing off some steam before you get down to the hard graft of studying, which is why we've rounded up some of the best things to do if you’re staying in or near Cardiff for the festive period.

Cinderella at the New Theatre

The annual Christmas pantomime is without a doubt one of the best ways to spend a winter’s evening. This year at the New Theatre, the pantomime is Cinderella and the production promises audiences enchanted pumpkins, sparkling glass slippers and a handsome Prince Charming, played by Any Dream Will Do winner and West End star Lee Mead. The story of Cinderella is a classic, and watching the beloved tale unfold alongside fantastic musical numbers, over-the-top costumes and lots of laughs is definitely an experience not to be missed! Going to see a pantomime is a perfect way to spend some quality time with the family and makes for a brilliant Christmas gift, but as this one is Cardiff’s biggest pantomimes yet, make sure to book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. As with any theatre production, seats and prices for this production will vary but all students receive £2 off their ticket price on selected dates so there’s no reason not to experience a night full of festive entertainment at the pantomime!

Cardiff Winter Wonderland is always a popular choice among students and local residents alike, and it’s definitely not hard to see why! Firstly, you can grab a bite to eat (or a hot mulled beverage to drink) at the Alpine Village where the delightful and authentic chalet units will serve everything from German sausages to freshly made crepes while Radio Cardiff DJs provide nightly entertainment and live music to get even the biggest Scrooge into the Christmas spirit. Secondly, you can visit the fantastic collection of funfair rides and attractions situated next to the Alpine Village, including the family friendly penguin bumper cars and also the 200ft high Sky Swing attraction that is perfect for those seeking a thrill this winter. Finally, there is the Open Air Ice Rink which offers a number of skating sessions throughout the day during the Christmas period, with some bank holiday exceptions, which is perhaps the undeniable centrepiece of Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland. Prices for students start at just £7.50, making it a budget-friendly festive experience everyone can enjoy!

For a traditional Christmas shopping experience, look no further than the Craft Folk Cardiff Christmas Market. Open every day until the 23rd of December, the Christmas Market is comprised of unique wooden stalls that have each been designed and built by Craft Folk to house over 100 predominantly Welsh businesses selling a fantastic variety of high quality, authentic products. The market stalls sell everything from traditional Welsh heritage items, such as lovespoons and Welsh slate products, to silver and precious stone jewellery and organic creams and balms, so even if you’ve left your Christmas shopping until the last minute, you’re guaranteed to find something for everyone on your list. The market is located in the pedestrian district of Cardiff city centre along The Hayes and Trinity Street and is open from 10am to 5:30pm throughout the week with late night shopping until 7pm on Thursdays.

Remember to stay tuned to our Facebook, Twitter and Google+ pages for news of an exciting special offer for students who sign for a new property with us in January. From the whole team here at Capital Properties, we hope you all have a lovely (and safe!) Christmas, however you choose to spend it. We’re looking forward to welcoming all you students back to Cardiff in 2015!
