The go-to guide to Cardiff's hottest new restaurants

Central Library/Mill Lane photo by Jon Candy on FlickrOne of the things we love the most about living in Cardiff is the abundance of diverse and exciting eateries; from local luxury Baguettes & Bagels to the city's first ever health and fitness cafe, there is a fantastic mixture of restaurants, cafes and sandwich shops in Cardiff, and this doesn't look set to end any time soon!

Cardiff is the new home for some of the UK's most exciting restaurants

Over the last couple of months, it's become increasingly evident that Cardiff is the place to be when it comes to establishing new restaurants and bars. As the number of brands opening new branches in the Welsh capital increases, the multicultural Cardiff food scene continues to expand and offer a wide selection of new cuisines and dining experiences. The question of where to visit first is an important one, so we've listed some of the places we can’t wait to try out to make your decision that much easier.

Wahaca Street Kitchen in The Hayes, CardiffWahaca

Last week, Mexican restaurant Wahaca marked the opening of their first restaurant outside of London by handing out free food in the city centre, effectively winning the hearts (and the stomachs) of the people of Cardiff. Co-founded by former Masterchef winner Thomasina Miers, the restaurant is due to open tonight, Thursday 13th November, and promises to serve up the “tidiest tacos on the Taff.” The menu includes a gorgeous mixture of Mexican favourites that range from smaller bites of taquitos, tostadas and quesadillas, to the bigger platos fuertes dishes of burritos and enchiladas. Prices are very student-friendly and, for an extra treat, the new restaurant in The Hayes also has an upstairs cocktail bar offering drinks with a modern Mexican twist.

Street Food Cardiff

Inspired by trips to the culinary capitals of Brooklyn, Barcelona, London and Berlin, Street Food Cardiff is an independent collective of street food traders whose mission is to revolutionise the dining options of the people of Cardiff. Every weekend between 31st October and 27th December, Street Food Cardiff rotates food traders and menu options to provide diners with a constantly changing food court and an underground dining experience. Located at The Depot on Dumballs Road, Street Food Cardiff was launched as a response to the number of corporate chain restaurants in Cardiff city centre and seeks to expand the taste buds of Cardiff with some of the best local food vendors and guest chefs.

If, however, the thought of facing the frightful Cardiff weather in search of food sounds less than ideal, the city is thankfully home to some fantastic takeaways as well! Chinese takeaway restaurant Hokkei is one such option, and has a menu that goes far beyond your typical takeaway fare. Owners Larkin Cen and Dale Williams are also Masterchef alumni, and they developed Hokkei with three core principles at the heart of the business: authentic ingredients, innovative cooking, and awesome tastes. The pair aimed to turn Asian takeaway food on its head and, judging by some early reviews after the restaurant’s official opening on 10th November, this goal has certainly been achieved - they've even had to close up early some nights due to overwhelming demand. The current delivery radius for Hokkei is 2.5 miles from their address on Crwys Road, making it an ideal choice for all you hungry students!

When it comes to eating in Cardiff, we’re definitely spoiled for choice! With big burger restaurants Five Guys and Burger and Lobster opening in Cardiff before the end of the year, here at Capital Properties we can only hope we have enough of an appetite to taste a bit of everything the city's newest eateries have to offer!
