Wales Millennium Centre: 10th anniversary celebrations

Cardiff Bay photo by RichardJo53, via FlickrWhen you move to a new city for university, it's very easy to settle into the routine of only returning to places you're familiar with, whether that's the local pub or your favourite nightclub! While there is definitely nothing wrong with sticking to what you know, your time at university is a fantastic opportunity to expand your horizons every once in a while, and if you're interested in swapping student hotspots for local gems, we're here to help! Here at Capital Properties we want to make sure that you experience everything that Cardiff has to offer, so today we discuss why every student in the city should visit the Wales Millennium Centre at least once during their time here.

More than just a theatre

Earlier this month, the Wales Millennium Centre was voted the most welcoming venue in the UK at the UK Theatre Awards 2014, and, as this fantastic accolade comes just a month before the Centre’s 10th anniversary on 27th November, there has never been a better time to experience everything that the venue has to offer.

Although universally recognised for standing in front of the secret entrance to the Torchwood HQ from the popular Doctor Who spin-off series, the Millennium Centre is so much more than an iconic building! The Centre hosts guided tours twice a day where you can go behind the scenes of one of the biggest stages in Britain, and view the inscription carved into the building’s steel façade from an entirely new perspective. The guided tours are the ideal opportunity for visitors to get stuck into the vision, culture and history of this truly memorable building and afterwards, you can relax in one of the many bars and cafés available in the Centre. Whether you choose to meet friends in the contemporary coffee and wine bar or treat yourself at the Centre’s own ice cream parlour, there’s a place to whet every appetite.

Although the Centre has so much to offer its guests, ultimately most of us will visit the venue to enjoy some of the country’s most innovative and most iconic productions live on stage. In honour of its 10th anniversary, the centre has announced an exciting programme of theatre beginning this autumn and continuing throughout 2015.

Shakespeare Schools Festival

Whether you’re studying literature at Cardiff University or drama at Cardiff Met, you might be interested in the Shakespeare Schools Festival. This winter, the Millennium Centre is supporting local schools and helping them stage abridged Shakespeare productions in a professional theatre space. Every night between 4th and 6th November, schools from across South Wales will perform different Shakespeare plays, including Twelfth Night and Romeo & Juliet, and celebrate their achievement in putting on a wonderful evening of entertainment. Tickets cost just £10 and are available in advance, although seating is unreserved so arrive early to secure the best view!

For all you dance students, the Centre welcomes back National Dance Company Wales to its stage for one night only on 22nd November. Blaze will comprise of several youth dance groups from across South Wales coming together in both a celebration of their talent, and the marking of ten years of youth dance gala performances. Tickets for the production cost £10 for adults and £7 for concessions, and the groups’ dedication to their art ensures that the show will be a wonderful spectacle to witness!

The Lion King

Finally, there will be something for everyone between 6th November 2014 and 11th January 2015, when the award-winning West End production of The Lion King comes to the Wales Millennium Centre in an opportunity to watch the performance of a lifetime. Ticket sales for this production have been record-breaking, but there are still seats available for some performances throughout its run. Ticket prices range from £20.50 up to £80 and are selling fast, so if you’d like to secure yourself a seat, you’ll need to act quickly. Don’t worry if you miss out though; for those of you with a couple of years left on your course, or if you’re looking to stay in Cardiff after you graduate, you can always book ahead for next year’s touring production of Shrek The Musical and swap the Pridelands of Africa for Shrek’s swamp!
