Top Cardiff locations to escape the summer heat!

Cardiff City Sunset

It's pretty unusual for Cardiff to get the extremely warm temperatures we're currently receiving, and we're not complaining, but every so often it's nice to get away from the warm temperatures and unwind in a cool (preferably air-conditioned) location! That's why we've created a list of the top locations in Cardiff to go and relax, unwind and escape from the heat.

Cardiff International Pool

Situated down in Cardiff Bay, the Cardiff International Pool is a great place to escape the heat and still get your daily exercise. The 50m Olympic Pool is perfect for everyone, whether you’re looking to go for leisurely swim or looking to train for an event you’ll find everything here. There is also a smaller leisurely sized pool, with slides and other cool features.  What’s more because it’s situated near the heart of Cardiff Bay when you’re finished you can relax and enjoy the sunset in one of Mermaid Quay’s many bars or restaurants. The Pool and other facilities are open between the hours of 6am-10pm Monday to Friday and 8am-8pm Saturday and Sunday, but please check the International Pool’s website for full details.

Cardiff Arena

Also known as the Cardiff Bay Ice Arena or the Big Blue Tent by many ice hockey fans, the Cardiff Arena is currently the home of the Cardiff Devils Ice Hockey team. Nevertheless, it’s also a great place to get away from the sun’s heat, in the arena you can learn to skate, host or attend birthday parties as well as visit numerous ice shows, and of course watch the Cardiff Devils play. For full details of opening times and events please visit the Planet Ice website and Cardiff Devils tickets are available through the Cardiff Devils’ website.

Cardiff International White Water

Not a big fan of lengths in a pool? Would rather have a bit more excitement? Then head down to Cardiff International White Water for a fun-filled energetic couple of hours. Situated in the heart of Cardiff’s International Sports Village you’ll be able to enjoy white water runs or flat water runs. If you’re interested in taking your experience further, the company offers an additional range of courses, including Canoeing, Rafting, Kayaking and many more. The arena is open from 9am to 5pm Mon, Tues, Thurs & Sat and is open until 8pm on a Wednesday and Friday. Sunday opening hours are 9am-4pm.

St David’s Shopping Centre

If you’re just looking to get away from the sun, then why not check out St David’s Shopping Centre, it’s fully air-conditioned and offers a wide range of shops for you to browse at your leisure. There is also a number of restaurants and coffee shops situated throughout. The Cardiff Library is also in close proximity so if you’re looking for a cool and quiet place away from the sun, look no further!

Wales Millennium Centre

Why not check out a musical or show during the summer months, there’s no law saying you have to be outside constantly throughout summer. The Wales Millennium Centre is situated in the heart of Cardiff Bay and has a wide range of musicals, shows and other performances on daily. There is also a range of free musical performances on offer most lunchtimes and early evenings, including jazz music, carnivals and many more.
