A Summer City Beach in Cardiff
This summer, 300 tonnes of sand will create an 'urban beach' in Cardiff Bay where thousands of visitors will be able to soak up the sun (if we have any!), relax and have fun. Located in Roald Dahl’s Plass, the 'urban beach' adds some extra spice to this summer’s fun packed Cardiff Festival.
Work to install the beach will begin immediately after the Cardiff Bay Food and Drink festival, which takes place on 12th - 14th July, and the attraction will be ready to open on 27th July. It will remain open until 1st September, so let’s pray that the weather improves this summer. Beach enthusiasts will be able to unwind on deck chairs, lie on the soft sand protected by giant sunshades or show off their sporting skills - with volleyball nets and football posts also being fixed. The beach will also feature live local music, entertainment and dance groups, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
The Cardiff Bay beach is also family and child friendly, with sand pits and shallow water pools allowing kids to play and have fun safely and soundly. Traditional fairground rides, like the merry-go-round, will be temporarily installed for extra enjoyment, and will give people a real-life seaside town feel. So even if the weather fails to hold out, it will provide people with some classic British summer time experience.
The attraction, which is supported by First Choice, has been given praise by Cabinet member for Sport, Councillor Huw Thomas:
"Roald Dahl Plass was created to be used as an events space and we are delighted to have reached an agreement with organisers to host this free-to-access attraction at no cost to the Council. This will be a great place to enjoy a party atmosphere, hear some great live music, and hopefully get a suntan to boot."
Other ‘urban beaches’ in UK cities such as Liverpool, London and Birmingham and across Europe in Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin have been triumphs, and it’s predicted that Cardiff will attract the same success. Cardiff Bay is an ever growing development project and this scheme is another positive step towards enhancing Cardiff’s excellent reputation.
To enhance your experience, Cardiff Bay also features a large selection of amazing restaurants, bars and café’s as well as incredible views of the waterfront, so make sure you don’t miss out this summer. The urban beach is another exciting aspect of this summer’s fantastic Cardiff Festival, which also features the Cardiff Carnival, Cardiff Harbour Festival and a Mardi Gras parade.
