Cardiff Area Guide: Gabalfa
Gabalfa is a small residential neighbourhood located north of Cardiff city centre. It is situated between the north most end of Pontcanna Fields to the west, and Cathays Cemetery to the east. To the north of Gabalfa is Heath, and to the south is Cathays.
Gabalfa is a quiet, residential area, best suited for people looking to live in a more family/professional orientated area while still having convenient access to popular Cardiff areas such as the Bay and the city centre.
The name Gabalfa is derived from the Welsh word ‘Ceubalfa’ which literally means place of the boat. This name harks back to when Gabalfa was home to a ferry crossing across the river Taff, which has now been replaced by Western Avenue.
Prior to this, Gabalfa was a small hamlet that was a part of the Llandaff parish.
Things to do
One of the biggest pluses for moving to Gabalfa is how close it is to Pontcanna Fields, Cathays Cemetery and Roath Park! You can enjoy all the greenspace that Cardiff has to offer just a short walk from your front door.
The city centre is nothing more than a short walk away, but if you’re not in the mood for walking, the area is well served by Cardiff buses which offer regular trips to the city centre and Cardiff Bay.
While the neighbourhood itself doesn’t have much to offer activity-wise, it is a great solution for people who want to live in a quiet residential district, but still be close to the bustle of the city centre.
Where to shop
Again, due to how much of a residential area Gabalfa is, there isn’t a huge variety of shopping options available. However, it is still well stocked with local, independent shops to make picking up the essentials no problem whatsoever.
That said, Whitchurch Road offers a great selection of restaurants, cafes and bars, along with a few unique shops to explore.
Gabalfa has such good transport links connecting it to the city centre, that popping into town to do some shopping is a breeze.
Due to its close proximity to the Gabalfa Interchange and the A48, it is extremely easy for drivers to access the rest of Cardiff and the M4, making it a good neighbourhood for people who commute to work, however, the roads around the area during rush hours can be very busy!
Unfortunately, there isn’t a rail station, though there are talks of one being built in the near future. The closest train stations to this neighbourhood are Heath Low Level and Heath High Level to the north, and Cathays to the south. It takes roughly a 30 minute walk to get to these stations.
Gabalfa also has several bus routes running through it, connecting you to the entirety of Cardiff. One of these routes includes the number 35 which travels to Cardiff Bay via Cathays and Cardiff Central station.
Gabalfa is the ideal neighbourhood for people who are looking for a quiet residential district with plenty of transport links.
