Immerse yourself in Cardiff's creative culture

Cardiff Street Art by Gareth James on GeographNow that Freshers' Week is over and the slightly scary reality of having to study is beginning to settle in, we bet that those of you who are new to Cardiff may not have seen much of the city beyond your lecture theatres and the nearest pub

By now, you should have unpacked your last box, attended your first house party and locked in your study schedule (we hope!), so what could be a better time to expand your horizons a little bit and get to know more about your new home? Whether you're a Roath resident, a new addition to the cultural melting-pot of Canton, or you've signed up to the student hotspot that is Cathays, we think it's always important to get to know the area you live in.

A hive of innovation

To help you discover all of what Cardiff has on offer, we've selected a few of the best upcoming events happening in and around the city that we think will provide you with the perfect introduction to life in Cardiff. There has never been a better time to get to know this vast, vibrant city – especially for those of you interested in art and hungry for culture.

October is absolutely jam-packed with inspiring events to celebrate the work of both those who live here and the wealth of artists who choose to come to Cardiff to leave their mark, so read on to find our favourite festivals and events!

Made in Roath – 15th-22nd October

Made in Roath LogoThere's a clue in the name, but Made in Roath is an annual artist-led festival which attracts people from across Cardiff to the lively district of Roath to soak in all that its inventive inhabitants have achieved, through art exhibitions, community groups, live performances and more.

The festival, which also celebrates its 5th anniversary this year, doesn't restrict itself to any particular venue and instead uses both commercial and public spaces as their exhibition areas. What's also great about the event is the promotion it gives to new and emerging artists alongside more established names, making it truly about celebrating the work of people from Roath. So while it may be a good idea to check out the programme beforehand if you'd prefer to plan ahead, an afternoon stroll in the area during the festival should be enough to ensure that you'll stumble upon something great, maybe even the next big thing!

Empty Walls – 21st September-25th October

'Dude looks like a Welsh lady' by Phil Morgan IllustrationEmpty Walls is a citywide art festival that you may find yourself unexpectedly attending whether you're walking through the city centre or cutting through a side street, as the vacant walls of Cardiff become a blank canvas for a host of respected graffiti artists the world over.

Created with the aim of providing a 'visual alternative to the bombardment of advertisement and high street chains', the Empty Walls festivals brings together over 20 local and international artists to help transform Cardiff into an open-air gallery, with each piece inspired by themes from Welsh and British folklore and heritage. A number of last year's pieces are still taking pride of place in popular streets such as City Road, and new pieces are currently in progress on student hangouts such as Buffalo Bar, making this an event that definitely leaves its mark on the local community.

Chapter Arts Centre

Chapter Arts Centre on Wikipedia CommonsThe Chapter Arts Centre in Canton has a reputation for being one of the best artistic spaces in Cardiff, and even a quick visit is enough to see why! The beautifully designed space is home to a selection of theatres and exhibition spaces, as well as an on-site café, making it the ideal place to visit if you're looking for something that will occupy both your mind and your stomach!

Upcoming events at the centre include a varied mix of films, including the best of new releases alongside cult classics, energetic live performances, and a host of creative classes offering lessons in sewing and storytelling, among others. So many events in fact, that we couldn't choose just one, but we're sure if you take a quick glance at their schedule you'll find something you fancy. Chapter also offers a student membership option, allowing you to learn new skills and appreciate the arts at a fantastic discounted price!

We think that any of these suggestions would provide a fantastic opportunity to get to know Cardiff over the next month, but if you’re a culture connoisseur and feel that we've missed something out, let us know on our Facebook, Twitter or Google + pages!

Capital Properties have a number of fantastic properties available if you're still looking for the perfect student accommodation, and with friendly staff always available at our Cathays office, feel free to pop in and ask us any questions you have about living in the area!
