Top 5 pubs in Cathays and Roath to watch the FIFA World Cup

Jabulani football used at FIFA World Cup 2010

On June 12th 2014, the 20th FIFA World Cup will kick off in Brazil as the Seleção Brasileira take on Croatia in São Paulo. The World Cup is held once every four years and is one of the world's most viewed sporting events, with the 2006 final in Germany attracting a global audience of 715.1 million. This year’s tournament also marks the first time the World Cup has been held in a South American country since 1978.

Wales may not have qualified for the tournament (they've only managed it once, in 1958), but as Cardiff boasts a dynamic multicultural population we are sure thousands of people will be cheering on their native countries in the many local pubs. Among these are student pubs situated in Cathays and Roath, where you can relax, unwind and enjoy the game with a few mates. Here are some of our favourites:

The Woodville Pub (The Woody)

The Woodville

The Woodville Pub (also known as The Woody) is a favourite with many students due to its location and its prices. Situated on the corner of Woodville Road and Senghennydd Road, the establishment offers a wide range of pub food including everything from chimichangas to fish and chips. It also boasts a front terrace and beer garden where you can enjoy the summer weather as well as the match.

Koko Gorilaz

Koko Gorilaz can be found on Miskin Street, right in the heart of Cathays and directly opposite the Cardiff University Student’s Union. In the pub’s Zebra Lounge there is a varied selection of traditional pub dishes available but also authentic Mexican and Indian meals that are handmade and can be amended to suit individual tastes. The pub is well known for its live entertainment and is a great place to watch football matches and meet like-minded individuals.

Crwys Pub

If you’re looking for a quieter location to enjoy the football, then make sure you get down to the Crwys Pub on Crwys Road. The pub is part of the Brains pub chain and offers a good choice of food and drink at reasonable prices. The place benefits from a garden where you can watch the match while enjoying the weather (which we hope will be glorious!), and its substantial number of TVs means you’ll never struggle to find a place to catch all the action.

Royal George

The Royal George

The Royal George on Mackintosh Place is a favourite with many sport fans and is frequently filled to capacity on many sporting occasions. Its size can make it a difficult place to relax and unwind while watching the match, but if it is atmosphere you’re after, then you’ll struggle to find anywhere outside of the city centre that does it better. Like many of the pubs on our list, the Royal George offers an exciting mixture of pub food and drink at prices that won’t do damage to your bank account.

The Claude Pub

Situated on Albany Road in Roath, the Claude Pub offers a wide range of entertainment and a varied selection of food and drink. It’s the perfect place to watch FIFA World Cup matches as it is well known for displaying sporting events and regularly shows sport from both SKY and BT Sport. If you’re looking to enhance your evening’s entertainment, then make sure to check out the quiz night on Mondays, open mic night on Thursdays and Sundays and live bands on Fridays and Saturdays.

There are of course hundreds of pubs across Cardiff where you can enjoy the FIFA World Cup but we couldn't name them all! We’d love to hear what your plans are for the tournament, which team you’re supporting and where you’re watching the matches, so don’t hesitate to share them with us on Facebook, Twitter or Google+, and don’t forget that if you need student accommodation, Capital Properties can help!
