Summer of fun - The Cardiff Festival 2013

Cardiff Food and Drink FestivalFinally, exams are over and done with for another year, so now it's time for students to kick back and relax with a summer of fun right here in Cardiff! Whether you're staying in Cardiff this summer to carry on studying, to find a job to pay off all those student debts or just because you can’t bear to go home to your parents, you won't regret it!

Each summer, the Cardiff Festival provides an abundance of fantastic events in and around Cardiff to keep you busy, and this year is no different. From cultural, musical, artistic to sporting events, there really is something for everyone. The Cardiff festival has already started, but don’t fret, these unique events take place until 7th September.

At Capital Properties, we have provided some examples of what you can expect to see at the Cardiff Festival this summer:

Joust!

We kick off this weekend (22-23 June) with an action-packed and thrilling medieval Joust taking place in the grounds of Cardiff Castle. The Knights of Royal England will descend upon the Welsh capital with an army of entertaining performances for all to enjoy. With amazing horse stunts, rip roaring crowds, and epic falls (all portrayed in good humour!), this incredible event is certainly one to mark on the calendar. Other terrific features include: combat displays, juggling, a medieval encampment, a surgeon barber and junior jousting and sword fighting lessons.

Cardiff Multicultural Mela

On 30th June, we’ll celebrate together with the Cardiff Multicultural Mela. Having brought in crowds of 30,000 plus with huge success in recent years, the Mela brings people of all ages, colours and cultures together for one big festival and this year, we anticipate the same. Located in Roald Dahl’s Plass in Cardiff Bay, the show will introduce us to a unique blend of culture, music, dance, art, fashion and food all mixed into one for a fun-filled party extravaganza. Primarily a festival with Asian roots, this experience gives people the opportunity to share, explore and celebrate other cultures.

The Everyman Open Air Theatre Festival

This year, the Everyman Open Air Theatre Festival pays homage to some fantastic theatre shows, including Fawlty Towers, Guys and Dolls, Alice in Wonderland and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. From the 5th to the 30th July, head down to Sophia Gardens to watch some truly brilliant performances from outstanding actors and actresses.

Cardiff International Food and Drink Festival

This tasty annual free event is a definite go-to this summer if you’re staying in Cardiff. Also set in Roald Dahl’s Plass, the Cardiff International Food and Drink Festival lets you choose from over 100 specialist stalls each producing a delicious selection of farmhouse cheeses, chocolates and liquors, indulging in some of the finest produce Wales has to offer. With entertainment and music varying from Jazz, Soul, Folk and Country & Western along with the stunning scenery of Cardiff Bay, this really is worth a visit. So if you’re in Cardiff on 12th-14th July, head to Cardiff Bay!

Cardiff Carnival

The colourful and crazy Cardiff Carnival heads into town on the 10th August, where you can expect to see wonderful, unique and fascinating street entertainment. Become immersed in Samba drumming, funky street bands, Brazilian Capoeira, African drums and more. An array of colours, costumes, art and style will have you partying like no other in the streets of Cardiff. The Cardiff Carnival takes place at the Hayes and anyone can join! And best of all it’s free, so there’s absolutely no excuse for missing out!

Cardiff – Wales LGBT Mardi Gras

This year will see the annual Mardi Gras move to the Millennium Stadium, where we can expect to see thousands of people flood to Wales’ Capital city for a music and entertainment bonanza! By moving to the Stadium, this family friendly event can expect to become one of the biggest Mardi Gras events in the world. With 10 hours of music including Beverly Knight, Rylan Clark, The Voice’s Sean Rumsey, Diva Forever and the Lady Gaga experience, this event is sure to be a triumph once again. Taking place on the 31st August, this event will also feature a parade moving through the city.
