If you went out recently you must have noticed Cardiff is definitely turning Christmassy. Santa's Grotto is being set up on Queen Street (in Churchill Way to be precise) and some stalls are popping up around St John the Baptist Church.
It will all be ready for 15th November, when Cardiff will Step into Christmas at 4pm with the switching-on of the lights. You will find food stalls and hand-crafted gifts on St John Street, Working Street and Trinity Street from 15th November to 23rd December. The main Christmas market will be open until 8pm and so will the shops around. Wander around the stalls, allow yourself some mulled wine and go ice-skating (or maybe don’t drink and skate). You will find entertainment all around the city centre, on the streets afore-mentioned and also The Hayes, High Street and the Castle Quarter.
Santa will have the power to duplicate himself as he will be found in Cardiff Castle and on Churchill Way. Beware if you’ve been naughty, he’s everywhere! Don’t worry if you meet Bob the Builder and Wendy in the neighbourhood, that’s normal too.
If you can’t wait until 15th November to do some Christmas shopping you can get Christmas cards and presents in St John the Baptist Church where lovely volunteers will welcome you at the Charity shop set up until 11th December.
We’ve mentioned food, drink, what about ice-skating will you say? Don’t worry you can challenge your balance problems from 22nd November to 6th January on the open-air Ice Rink set up on the City Hall lawns. If you’re part of a big Student Society with a budget you can even try to book exclusive use of the rink for a fun Christmas party on ice!
Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland will not only include the ice-rink, as the Star Ride is returning for the second year. For those who weren’t in Cardiff last year, it is a 60m high spinning chair ride which, for £5, will offer an amazing view over the city for those who are brave enough to open their eyes.
Capital FM will be rocking the ice rink with their Capital FM Ice Party from 23rd November to 3rd January. For £12 skate every Friday and Saturday nights (8.20pm-9.20pm and 9.40pm-10.40pm) to the latest tunes!
If you’re a medieval geek don’t hesitate and head to Caerphilly’s Medieval Fayre on 8th and 9th December. Bathe in the atmosphere of Christmas past offered by the castle and the fayre, drink some good-old fashioned spiced wine and find the sword and costume you’ve always dreamed of!
If you want to stay a bit more in the past you can attend Victorian Christmas Tours and Christmas Banquets, for a fee.
Last but not least, let’s not forget Cardiff Bay and its Christmas Market from 7th to 9th December. On Sunday Radio Cardiff’s “Youth Beats” on Twitter @YouthBeats and on Facebook will launch its new programme. Students are more than welcome to join them!
Check out also the Millennium Centre’s Glanfa stage for some free concerts. One of the final features of Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland it the popular New Year’s Eve celebrations, the famous “Calennig” with free live music, midnight ice-skating and fireworks!
