What's on in Cardiff over the August Bank Holiday 2012?

The Bank Holiday weekend is here, and in typical British fashion, the weather looks rather changeable, with rain forecast in Cardiff for Saturday and Monday. Sunday looks to live up to its name and be sunny though, so let's make the most of it!

Here are a few things you might want to consider this weekend…

British Speedway – Saturday 25th August

Tomorrow, Saturday 25th August, the FIM British Speedway Grand Prix will be hitting the Millennium Stadium. Sixteen riders compete against each over the course of 20 hears, with the top scorers going through to the semi-finals and final. The motto is “No breaks, no gear, no fear” so if you want a slice of extreme sport action, this is the event for you!

There will be entertainment on show before the start of the race from 16:30-18:00, including music and dance. Ticket-holders can also watch the practice from 17:30-20:00 this evening.

  • British Speedway Adult tickets - £29, Family Tickets £93, Concessions - £19.

Paralympic Torch – Monday 27th August

We’ve had a few weeks in which to start missing the Olympics, and now the amazing Paralympic athletes are about to wow us with their feats of superhuman athletic prowess!

Ahead of the start of the Games will be one of three special Flame Festivals held as part of the Paralympic Torch Relay. There will be free disability sports demonstrations and sessions at the City Centre Live Site, and live performances in and around the Wales Millennium Centre from 2pm down in the Bay.

From 7pm, the Welsh Flame will arrive in Roald Dahl Plass as a spectacular lantern procession accompanies the Torchbearers.

  • Paralympic Torch – Free!

Doctor Who Exhibition - Ongoing

If family-friendly science fiction adventure is more your thing, then the Doctor Who Exhibition has moved from London to Cardiff and is now bigger and better than ever. You get the chance to fly the TARDIS and see monsters and props from BBC1’s hit television series. Great fun for geeks of all ages down in Cardiff Bay!

The good Doctor returns to our television screens on Saturday 1st September to face “every Dalek ever” in Asylum of the Daleks in the latest series featuring Matt Smith as the time-traveller.

  • Doctor Who Exhibition – Adults £15 (£13 if pre-booked); Family - £46 (£38); Children - £11 (£9)

And on a slightly more mundane note, don’t forget that the bin collections will be put back a day next week! Check out the Cardiff Council site for details.
