Cardiff welcomes the Olympics!
You'd think that the London 2012 Olympics would begin in, well, London. But by a curious twist, the first sporting events of the games are actually taking place today right here in Cardiff! Olympic rules mean that London can't host any events until after the opening ceremony, which takes place on Friday evening.
The games begin in the Millennium Stadium with Great Britain v New Zealand in women’s football at 16:00, followed by Cameroon v Brazil at 18:45. Olympic women’s football might not be top of everyone’s interests, but it’s great for Cardiff to have such an important role as the place where the Games get started.
Olympics celebrations kicked off at 11am with On your Marks! Featuring live music, games and street artists until 7pm in the city centre. ‘Come and Try’ sessions are taking place, including Inflatable Netball on Churchill Way, Inflatable Hockey on the High Street, Rugby throwing net on Queen Street, Table Tennis on John Street, and Inflatable Football on St Mary’s Street.
A whole host of street artists are also descending on the city centre, from De Ramos Acrobats to the Team Bee Gee. For full details of On your marks! visit the Cardiff Council website.

Oh, and with international media descending on Cardiff, what’s the betting that an American news anchor will say they’re reporting from “West London”?
